Photographic Record
Our newest project is to build up a photographic record of our area, especially of buildings under threat of demolition or major development, and also of subjects not currently covered.
Photographs
The Borough is fortunate to have an impressive archive of historic photographs, including the splendid Tom Francis Collection recording places, events and characters of Victorian and Edwardian Mitcham. The Merton Memories Project, produced by Merton Library and Heritage Service, offers unprecedented access to a unique collection of photographs charting the history of Merton over the past 150 years. Photos arranged by Topic
Most of our photo collections are grouped by location. You might prefer to explore them by topics. A few Topic groups are available here:
The Bill Rudd Collection
The late William J Rudd spent 50 years exploring the history of Morden, and captured on film the changing face of the area over those decades. The Society is delighted to be able to hold this important collection, though it is still facing up to the challenge of sorting, scanning and cataloguing it (offers of help welcome!).
The Roger Armstrong Collection: Historic Mitcham cottages
The Society is grateful to surveyor Roger Armstrong, for 40 years Development Manager at Solon Housing Association at Wandsworth, for letting us scan and display his collection of photographs taken in the 1970s and 1980s of historic cottages and houses in Mitcham, many of them timber-framed and weatherboarded. Many of these buildings were demolished and their sites developed, despite the efforts of Roger and Solon to preserve and restore them. However, some were saved and are still with us.
