Publicationsareexpandingagain,atleastinthenumberofthosegoingthroughtheeditorialprocess:wehavesomemorereminiscences,astudyofthePoorLawasitoperatedinMorden,andahistoryofFry’ssmeltingcompany-notperhapsfamiliarterritory,butsomethingthattheSocietyshouldhelptoputonrecord.Intherecentfinancialyearwereceivedjustunder£1,000forpublications,andinadayatthepostponedMertonHeritageDiscoveryDaywesold23publicationstothevalueof£63. Wehavemaderepresentationsasneededinplanningmatters,thoughalwaysongroundsofhistoryandarchaeology,forwearenotacivicamenitiessociety,andsowemaintainedinterestinthetrialtrenchingontheAbbeyWallWorkssiteatMertonAbbey. TheSociety’sPhotographicProjectisnowatanendasaformaloperation,andwearenolongersendingprintstoSurreyHistoryCentre.DavidRoe,oursometimeTreasurer,feltthathehadtostopworkingontheProject, intowhichhehadputmucheffortoverquiteafewyears.Wearestillhappytoreceiveimagesforaccessviaourwebsite,solongasallmattersofcopyrighthavebeenagreed. Intheintervaltodayweshallbeabletohavetea,andIwanttoaskforyourthoughtsabouttherightplacefortea-time:moreofourtalksarenotaslongastalksusedtobe.Teabetweentalkandquestionsseemstodisruptthecontinuityofthespeaker’ssubject;teaafterwardsmaynotbeasimportanttosomeasgettinganearlybus; somesocietieshaverefreshmentsreadyandwaitingforwhenpeoplearrive.Ifyouhaveanythoughtsontheshapeofourafternoonshere,pleasesay,noworlater.
