Whilelivemeetingsweresuspended,othersocietiesbeganbroadcastingtalksbytheirownmembersonline:wedidnotdoso,simplybecausewedonothavepeoplewhohave(a)newmaterialtoshareand(b)presentationalskillsandmasteryofZoom,inotherwords,bothcompetenceandconfidence.OthersocietieshavereportedthatnumberswatchingaZoomlecturehavebeenfarhigherthanthosewhohadformerlyattendedlivemeetings, butofcourselivemeetingsbringwiththemareadyinterchangebetweenlivespeakerandaudienceandasocialopportunityformemberstomeeteachother.Wearenot,though,historicalrecluses,andmembershaverecentlygiventalksataschoolandfortheFriendsofStRaphael’sHospice.Membersalsofieldincominghistoricalinquiriesfromthepublic. IreportedmanymattersinsomedetailinmypreviousreportsentoutwiththeMarch2021Bulletin,soIshallavoidrepetition.IthankedtheretheeditorandprinteroftheBulletin,andwhenpeopleofferedcommentsduringtheconsultation/formalapprovalsprocesslaunchedatthattime,theyallpraisedourBulletinformaintainingnormalservice. Publicationsareexpandingagain,atleastinthenumberofthosegoingthroughtheeditorialprocess:wehavesomemorereminiscences,astudyofthePoorLawasitoperatedinMorden,andahistoryofFry’ssmeltingcompany-notperhapsfamiliarterritory,butsomethingthattheSocietyshouldhelptoputonrecord.Intherecentfinancialyearwereceivedjustunder£1,000forpublications,andinadayatthepostponedMertonHeritageDiscoveryDaywesold23publicationstothevalueof£63. Wehavemaderepresentationsasneededinplanningmatters,thoughalwaysongroundsofhistoryandarchaeology,forwearenotacivicamenitiessociety,andsowemaintainedinterestinthetrialtrenchingontheAbbeyWallWorkssiteatMertonAbbey. TheSociety’sPhotographicProjectisnowatanendasaformaloperation,andwearenolongersendingprintstoSurreyHistoryCentre.DavidRoe,oursometimeTreasurer,feltthathehadtostopworkingontheProject, intowhichhehadputmucheffortoverquiteafewyears.Wearestillhappytoreceiveimagesforaccessviaourwebsite,solongasallmattersofcopyrighthavebeenagreed.
